Stephen A. Mitchell

Dr. Stephen A. Mitchell (1946–2000) was an American psychoanalyst, author, and co-founder of relational psychoanalysis. Holding a Ph.D., he taught at New York University and Postdoctoral Program in Psychotherapy.

He is best known as the author of influential theoretical books including Relational Concepts in Psychoanalysis, Hope and Dread in Psychoanalysis, and Influence and Autonomy in Psychoanalysis.

Mitchell’s revolutionary integration of interpersonal and object relations theories transformed modern psychotherapy practice. His scholarly works remain foundational texts in mental health.
