Julia Alvarez

Julia Alvarez is a celebrated Dominican-American poet, novelist, and essayist known for her luminous explorations of cultural identity, immigration, and family. Born in New York City and raised in the Dominican Republic until her family fled political persecution, her dual heritage deeply informs her writing.

She achieved widespread literary acclaim with her debut novel How the García Girls Lost Their Accents and her historical masterpiece In the Time of the Butterflies, which dramatized the lives of the Mirabal sisters. Her works have received numerous honors, including the National Medal of Arts.
