The Artist’s Way – Julia Cameron
Julia Cameron, a writer, filmmaker and teacher, developed the program in The Artist’s Way while helping artists and other creative people overcome blocks that kept them from doing the work they longed to do. Her approach proved so effective that the book has become a worldwide phenomenon, used by novelists, painters, musicians, actors, business people and anyone who wants to live more creatively.
Cameron’s premise is that creativity is the natural order of life and that every person has creative potential, though it can be buried under fear, self-doubt, perfectionism, criticism and the habits of everyday life. She describes many people as shadow artists, who long to create but instead stay close to the arts in safer roles, such as working for other artists.
Her twelve-week course is designed to help readers recover their creative selves. It is built on two essential practices. The first is the morning pages: three handwritten pages of stream-of-consciousness writing every morning, which help clear mental clutter and silence the inner censor. The second is the artist date: a regular block of time spent alone doing something that nourishes the imagination, such as visiting a gallery, exploring a new neighborhood or browsing a shop.
Each week focuses on a theme, such as recovering a sense of safety, identity, power, integrity or abundance, and includes essays, exercises and tasks that help readers explore their history, confront limiting beliefs and take small creative risks. Cameron describes creativity as a spiritual practice while inviting readers of any belief to adapt her ideas.
The Artist’s Way is a transformative workbook for anyone seeking to rediscover their creativity and is best used actively over three months.
