The Threat – Andrew G. McCabe
Andrew G. McCabe spent more than two decades at the Federal Bureau of Investigation, working on cases involving organized crime, counterterrorism and national security, and rising to become deputy director and, for a period, acting director. In The Threat: How the FBI Protects America in the Age of Terror and Trump, he offers his account of his career and of the events surrounding his departure from the bureau.
McCabe describes his early years as an agent investigating Russian organized crime in New York, his work on counterterrorism after the September 11 attacks, including investigations such as the Boston Marathon bombing, and his experiences in senior leadership. He explains how the FBI works, the importance of its independence, and the professional standards and values that guide its agents.
A significant part of the book addresses the period following the 2016 presidential election, including the dismissal of FBI director James Comey, the investigation into Russian interference and McCabe’s own dismissal shortly before his planned retirement. He presents his perspective on these events and on the relationship between the bureau and political leaders.
The book is written from a personal viewpoint, and many of the events and individuals it discusses remain the subject of political controversy, with differing accounts offered by others involved.
The Threat will interest readers who want an insider’s perspective on the FBI, national security and recent American political history. Readers may wish to consult a range of sources for a fuller picture.
